This resource includes three Matlab-based software programs that can be used during lectures and tutorial sessions as teaching aids (“Basic Protection”, “Advanced Protection” and “Time Value of Money”). They form part of a first semester electrical engineering course, Power distribution and transmission networks 4089F at UCT
These programs are designed to:
- visually demonstrate to the students the effects of input parameter choices and changes, aiding in the conceptualisation of the concepts demonstrated.
- encourage interaction between student and software, thereby offering students the chance to apply their theory and grow in understanding.
- offer a way of measuring the depth of understanding of the student, by evaluation his/her interaction with the software in some way, calculating a mark, and emailing / storing this mark for evaluation by the teaching assistant.
- in the case of the “Advanced Protection” tutorial, prepare students for post-tutorial practical labs involving live systems, by allowing them to gain confidence in the application of the theory in a safe simulation environment.
